How long did your great dane live? What are your tips?
Main Post:
I just adopted a great dane, Wendy, last month. She's age 2 years, 8 months. She had at least 1 litter of puppies before we adopted her.
I understand danes live much shorter lives than smaller breeds. Last week Wendy got her laproscopic gastroplexy hoping to buy her some more time. She seems to be doing great now. She still will not be running around for an hour before or after she eats.
How long did you have your past great danes? What did they pass away from? I just want to get anecdotes beyond what chatGpt and Google can tell me. Thanks for your help. Please tell me something you think I should know that might not be readily available info.

Top Comment: Low end of about 7 (due to cardiomyopathy) but that was only one of 10. The rest were 10+ at the time of their passing. I’ve absolutely been blessed in that regard. It’s sad, but you just never know. Best advice I can give is to love them like they love you- 110%. No time is guaranteed. I’d definitely recommend joint supplements. Their hips and shoulders take a lot of abuse due to their size and the longer they can be comfortably active the better. Regular vet checkups to stay ahead of any issues.

How long did your Dane live?
Main Post:
Our boy Adonis will be 6 in September (or I guess he just turned 5 in September depending on if your glass is full or empty) and he’s still his same goofy self. Google tells me that Danes live an average of 8-10 years and he isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. He’s merlequin so it’s tough to tell if he’s graying or whitening. He’s also the product of an unethical breeder (we rescued him and according to the rescue they took the litter as well as mom and dad so we can all feel warm and fuzzy about that) so not the best genetics. He had parvo as a puppy and has also bloated and had his stomach tacked into place. We suspect hip dysplasia because he’s a bunny hopper, but the vet is not concerned at this time.
The reason I ask about longevity is because my wife and I are planning to move out of state soon which takes considerable planning and lots of family discuss. He’s a member of this family so his life and best interests matter too. Leaving him behind is completely out of the question. Where we go, he goes. I just want to get a feel for if we’re moving an elderly gentleman or a middle-aged guy.
I know every Dane is unique so we can’t compare lifespans from one to the other, but I’m just hoping to get a general consensus for lifespan from actual Dane owners that I trust (even if I don’t know any you personally haha). Thanks!
Edit: completely forgot to pay the dog tax! handful of photos here.
Top Comment: I had a Dane/pit mix. His name was Kingpin and he is always in my heart. He passed away Jan 18, 2020 (heart complications) He was 12. I moved a few times and I didn't think about it until it was too late about the challenge hard wood stairs would create for him. The 2nd to last move I made was to an amazing multi-level condo. He was still in great physical shape and full of life but there was no way I could allow him to go up and down the stairs with out being on a leash. His own size and energy level (early morning walk time) would scare the life out of me. He slipped twice. He loved running up them but going down was dangerous for both of us. I always had to have real sneakers on. House shoes almost killed me as well.
Aging Great Dane
Main Post:
I have a 9yo male Great Dane who's been with us since he was 40 days old, grew up like another brother with us during our teenage. He's been facing a lot of health issues, to start with - swollen heart tissues, weak Hind legs(shivering), bloat and recently kidney issues due to which his Hind legs have swollen. The vet has said nothing much can't be done since age is against him, tried all possible medications, but his health is only detoriating. It's really painful to see him like this, it it a wise option to consider euthanasia or just let him pass away naturally?
Top Comment: We had our girl for 13 years. She was a tough old bird, still liked to play and be queen of the house. One day, we noticed she wasn't getting around too well, and then the weight started to slowly drop, she was getting unsteady on her feet. We made the decision to let her go in peace. As soon as I got off the phone with the vet, she decided it was time to let go. Always always air on the side of compassion. It's the kindest thing we can do for them. I truly believe she was only holding on for as long as she did because she didn't think we were okay, as soon as she knew she let go. It's hard, it sucks. We miss her every day. She was a part of us. Our kids don't remember life without her. But our memories will have to hold us over until we meet her again. No matter what you choose for your boy, he knows you love him.
